Hope For Emily

Let’s call her Emily. She wakes up each morning and puts on her mask. No one can ever know who she really is. Her heart is heavy, but she goes through the day with a smile.  All Emily has ever known is to hide her true feelings. It is much easier going through life that way rather than be judged or scolded.  People are cruel and they just don’t understand what is going on inside. They would like to think they do, but they don’t.  So, she guards her heart.

Then there is God. Emily loves Him; at least she thinks she does. Love is a very hard concept for her to grasp.  It is something totally foreign and it scares her to even think about it. Does that mean she is not a Christian? People say that God loves unconditionally, how does anyone do that? Everyone who has ever told her that they love either wanted something or didn’t really mean it. So what is true love?

Now that Emily has a family of her own this love thing really confuses her. She has children now and would give her life to protect them. Now there are these people who want hugs and kisses. She doesn’t know how to react to this sometimes. Will her confusion mar the lives of her children?

Walking through this life is a great inward struggle for Emily.  She tends to shut everyone out in order to protect her from the pain that is so familiar. She doesn’t want to do that but feels that she has to.  Will there ever come a time when she understands love, or understands herself? Is there any hope for Emily?
